Ingredients
- 500g fresh fish (pomfret, rohu, or any other type you like)
- 1 teaspoon of curry powder
- 1 teaspoon of red chili pepper
- Add salt to taste.
- 2 tablespoons of mustard oil
For the curry:
- 2 medium onions, cut up small
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped up or pureed
- 1 tablespoon of garlic-ginger sauce
- 2 green chilies
- 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon of garam spice
- 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red pepper powder (it’s up to you)
- 1/2 cup of water
- Coriander leaves that are fresh
Steps for Preparation
Step 1. Make the marinade: Wash the fish pieces well and pat them dry.
Put salt, turmeric powder, and red chili powder on them and rub them in. Allow them to sit for 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 2. Fry the fish: Put mustard oil in a pan and heat it until it starts to smoke a little. Then turn down the heat.
Fry the fish pieces in a little oil for two to three minutes on each side, until they turn brown. Take it out and set it aside.
Step 3. Make the masala base. If you need to, add a little more oil to the same pan.
Put in the cumin seeds and let them pop.
Put in the chopped onions and cook them until they turn golden brown.
Add the garlic and ginger paste and stir. Cook for two minutes or until the raw smell goes away.
Add the turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and tomato sauce. As the masala cooks, the oil will separate from it.
Step 4. Put the fish and masala together. To make the masala base, add water and let it boil for two to three minutes.
Slide the fried fish pieces into the pan slowly.
Cover the fish and cook it on low heat for 5 to 7 minutes so it can soak up the juices.
Step 5. For the finishing touch, sprinkle with garam masala powder and fresh cilantro leaves.
